Dr. Caroline Bain
Citizenship: Dual Canadian and United Kingdom
Dr. Caroline Bain graduated from medical school at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and completed a family medicine residency in Edmonton, Alberta. Caroline has a thriving medical practice in Calgary, Alberta, with five other physicians.
Caroline’s love of the oceans and water began as a child snorkeling in the Caribbean. She obtained her open water diver certification 30 years ago, and eventually became certified as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer, cave diver and Advanced Trimix diver.
Combining her work and passion, Caroline completed training in diving and hyperbaric medicine, first at the NOAA/UHMS course in Seattle, Washington. Numerous courses followed— most recently, she completed the Fitness to Dive course in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Caroline performs recreational and commercial dive medicals as part of her practice, and has worked at a hyperbaric chamber in Calgary since 1999.
As the 2014-2016 Sedna Epic Expedition’s physician, she’ll monitor the safety of the snorkelers and divers in waters that can approach minus two degrees Celsius. And, she’ll conduct medical research—including administering WIFI pills to the snorkelers to transmit vital core body temperature data—ensuring that the women are medically fit to snorkel and scuba dive in frigid arctic waters.
Caroline’s other hobbies include golf, photography, yoga, skiing, trekking (she recently completed an ascent to the Everest Base Camp), reading, Killer Sudoku and singing in a choir.
