Naturalist, Artist & Jeweler
Kristin Wornson is a Minneapolis-based artist and naturalist, highlighting the beauty of the natural world. She received her BA from Iowa State University, including a year at the University of Salzburg & a summer Marine Science research program through the University of California, Davis. Her research experience includes a project studying the cannibalistic traits of the Hermissenda crassicornis nudibranch in northern California. She worked as a field research assistant recording the behaviors of obligate ant-following birds, at Cocha Cashu Research Station in Manu National Park in the Peruvian Amazon, as well as the migratory patterns of birds in the Midwestern United States.
She has worked as an educator, teaching a marine science program to middle & high school age children at the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Once per year, for the past 10 years, she serves as the Young Explorer’s Coordinator for Abercrombie & Kent’s Holiday Antarctica Voyage, endeavoring to instill her love of the ocean to the young people onboard, running a program combining marine biology, seamanship and the creative arts. She also serves as a Naturalist & Tour Manager onboard small expedition ships, on a contract basis with Abercrombie & Kent.
She started and operates her own art jewelry business, highlighting the exquisite beauty of tiny collected plants, both terrestrial & marine, captured in small glass vignettes. She hopes to infect people with her love of the oft-overlooked micro flora & fauna of the natural world & encourage people to look closer at it. Her work includes a diverse mix of species collection & preservation, metalsmithing, illustration, watercolor, printmaking & photography.
She is a PADI Divemaster, with certifications in Dry Suit & underwater propeller vehicle, and extensive experience diving in Kelp forest ecosystems.
She has traveled to all 7 continents, extensively throughout South America, Patagonia, Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands, Asia, Morocco, Australia & Europe. She has lived in Austria & Taiwan. Her multi-passionate life experience includes competitive gymnastics, gymnastics coaching, teaching English in Taiwan, entrepreneur, small business owner, artist, earthquake survivor.
She recently heard a quote that resonated with her, “Being your own boss is great because you get to choose which 16 hours per day you work”.
